Helen Taft is remembered for planting the first two cherry trees on the future site of the Martin Luther King, Jr Memorial. The act was part of a celebration of the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from the city of Tokyo to the people of Washington, DC. Mrs. Taft’s husband, President William Howard Taft, helped her plant the trees.<\/p>\n

The cherry tree myth is a well-known legend about George Washington. In the original story, when Washington was six years old he received a hatchet as a gift and damaged his father’s cherry tree. The legend has been passed down for generations and is still popular today.<\/p>\n
