George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 in Virginia. He was the first child of his parents, Augustine and Mary Washington. Washington’s father died when he was eleven, and he became the head of the family. Washington had little formal education, but he was intelligent and hardworking. In 1752, he joined the Virginia militia. He was soon made a colonel.<\/p>\n

In 1775, Washington was chosen to lead the Continental Army. The Revolutionary War lasted six years. In 1781, the British were defeated at the Battle of Yorktown. Washington then became known as the “father of his country.”<\/p>\n

In 1789, Washington was elected the first President of the United States. He was re-elected in 1792. He served two terms as President.<\/p>\n

During his Presidency, Washington made many important decisions. He decided to put the new capital of the United States in Washington, D.C. He also decided toSign the proclamation of neutrality, which kept the United States out of the war between Britain and France.<\/p>\n
