Taking a cutting from an apple tree is often the best way to propagate a new tree. Cutting from an existing tree has a number of benefits over from growing from seed, however, the cutting must be taken from a suitable donor tree and cared for properly in order to ensure it takes root and grows successfully. Below is an outline of how to successfully take a cutting from an apple tree.

Firstly, identify a healthy donor tree of the same variety as the new tree you wish to grow. Pick a branch which is mature and has recently grown. Cut off the branch at least 10 centimetres below a bud.

Next, prepare the cutting by removing any excess leaves or flowers, leaving only three or four buds intact. Then, cut the stem of the cutting just below a bud at an angle, allowing a maximum of one leaf per bud.

Now, it’s time to dip the cutting into a hormone rooting powder. This step isn’t essential, however using the powder is known to improve the chances of successful rooting.
