Avocado is one of the most popular fruits around the world. It is rich in essential fats, vitamins, minerals and flavour. But, most avocado connoisseurs find growing avocado indoors difficult. This is because the ideal conditions for avocado growing are quite demanding and quite hard to replicate indoors. However, with the right information and tools, it is indeed possible to grow an avocado tree indoors.

The first step to growing an indoor avocado tree is choosing the right kind of avocado. There are generally two types of avocado- the thinner, less lush Mexican avocado, and the thicker and larger Guatemalan avocado. The Mexican avocado is generally favoured for indoor growing due to its size, but any avocado can work. It is important to pick an avocado that is ripe, but not too soft. The perfect avocado should be slightly soft to the touch, with a few brown spots.

The next step is to identify the ideal conditions for your indoor avocado tree. The avocado needs sunlight and humidity, but not too much. It should ideally receive at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day, but should be monitored over-exposure. The humidity should stay between 70-80 % in order to provide the best environment for the tree to grow. If the humidity is too high, it can lead to fungal infection of the tree and its fruits.

The container for the indoor avocado tree must be large enough to adequately support the plant for the duration of its growth. It must be suitable for all weather conditions, with plenty of drainage holes and a water reservoir below to ensure water does not get blocked. The soil must be light and well-aerated with added nutrients, to provide the avocado tree with the necessary growth in its early stages.
