It takes more than a few weeks for an avocado tree to bear fruit, with the wait usually lasting about 4 to 5 years. Avocado trees typically grow for 15 to 20 years, which means that if you’re patient enough, you can reap an abundance of avocados from a tree you planted from seed. Although it might seem daunting at first, the reality is that avocado is one of the easiest fruits to grow at home.

Avocados are tropical and subtropical plants that grow best in USDA Hardiness Zones 9 through 11. If you are in colder climates, you can still have luck growing avocados indoors, provided you have enough sunlight and the right conditions.

Getting the right light is key – a location atop a balcony or in a back yard is ideal. The ideal growing spot gets plenty of sun and no wind. Avocado trees require a lot of water, so it’s important to water regularly but not too much. The ground should be slightly humid and never bone-dry.

The process of growing an avocado tree from seed is both simple and rewarding. All you will need is an avocado, some toothpicks, and a glass of water. To start, take your pit, or seed, out of the avocado and clean it off. Then, insert about three toothpicks into the seed so that it can be propped up in the glass of water. Fill the glass with enough water to cover about half the seed. Place the glass in a sunny spot and add enough water to keep the seed covered in water at all times.
