Avocado is a popular and valuable fruit – one that is prized for its delicious taste and nutritional value. Knowing when the tree is ready to harvest is essential for a successful crop.

Harvesting avocados at the right time is critical to ensuring a bumper crop of delicious, nutritious fruit. Before picking, avocado fruit should feel soft but not mushy and have slightly yellow or greenish skin. It should have darkened a bit, too. When it comes to size and weight, you’re looking for avocados that are roughly the size of a tennis ball.

Harvesting too early means the fruits will be smaller and have more tannins, meaning they will be bitter and unappealing. Harvesting too late means the flesh of the fruit will be stringy and mushy. To make sure they’re ripe, try to gently pinch or press the fruit. If it yields to gentle pressure, it’s ready to be picked.

In general, you want to pick avocados when they’re green-yellow to yellowish in color and when they’re still fairly firm. You can also check the skin for blemishes. If it has wrinkles or soft spots, it’s too ripe. Checking for size and pressing gently are the two best tests for when it’s time to pick an avocado.
