Essential Supplies

The most essential supplies for beginning the process of growing an avocado tree from seed are: an avocado seed from an edible fruit, a small bowl, toothpicks, water, a pot with soil (or alternatively, potting mix and perlite), and newspaper clippings or shredded newspaper. When selecting an avocado to use, be sure to select a fruits that is ripe and fragrant. Soft spots or other blemishes are evidence the fruit may not be suitable for planting.

Soaking

Once the avocado seed is chosen, it must be soaked in water overnight in order to get it started. The next day, take the seed and suspend it near the center of a bowl. Three toothpicks can be inserted near the top of the seed, allowing it to sit in the bowl without being totally submerged. The container should be filled with enough warm water to reach the bottom of the seed. It should be left in the water for several days and the water changed once per day, for a total time of about 4-6 days.

Sprouting

Sprouting of the seed will begin when the shell turns soft and deep brown-black color, and the split in the shell starts to open. Once it has reached this stage, the seed can be removed from the water, allowed to dry for 1-2 days, and planted in the soil.
