Prepping the tree is key – give it a good wash and make sure all the leaves are dry before you begin. You’ll need a few supplies including a drop sheet, white paint, turquoise paint, green paint, and a fine paintbrush. Use the white paint to ‘highlight’ the tips of the leaves, then add the turquoise paint to the base of the leaves. Once that is dry, use the green paint to add shadow along the sides of the leaves. Finish up by adding any details you like with the fine paintbrush. And that’s it – your very own palm tree painting!

To paint a palm tree, start by sketching the tree onto your canvas. Once you have the basic outline of the tree, start painting in the leaves with a green paint. To add some dimension to the leaves, paint in some shadow areas with a dark green or brown paint. For the trunk of the tree, start with a light brown color and then add in some darker colors to create a realistic look. To finish off the tree, add in some highlights with a white paint.

Just like any other trees that I will paint I will almost always start with black and then add to it with other colors. This allows me to get a feel for the tree and the colors that I want to use before I start painting. I also find that it is easier to add colors to black than it is to add black to colors.

Start off by mixing white blue and red to make a light blue color. Next, paint the sky with this color. Once the sky is dry, add in some palm trees. To do this, simply paint a black line down the center of each tree. Finally, paint the sun in the corner of the painting.
