Palm trees are a well-known tropical plant, which gives consumers a variety of delicious and nutritious fruits. But what is the fruit of the palm tree called? It turns out, it depends on the type of tree. There are few varieties of palm tree that have edible fruit, including coconut, date, and oil palm.

Coconuts, arguably the most iconic type of palm tree fruit, are round, oval or spherical in shape, covered with a thick and leathery rind, and filled with white, juicy flesh and a milky, clear liquid. Coconuts are generally 20-30 cm in diameter with a smooth, fibrous, and fairly tough husk. The fruit takes 12 months to mature and can weigh up to 1.5-2kg.

Dates come from the date palm tree and are probably one of the oldest cultivated plant species. They grow in clusters enclosed in a leathery skin and provide an excellent source of energy, fibre, calcium, iron, and vitamins. They are also high in sugar that is quickly digested by the body for an energy boost.

Oil palm fruits are usually oblong, reddish yellow, and about 4-6 cm long with a thick endocarp. These fruits consist of a hard shell and three layers of flesh – mesocarp, endocarp, and epicarp. Oil palm fruits, or drupes, are especially high in oil content – up to 50-60%. This makes them a valuable source of vegetable oil.
