How to Kill a Date Palm Tree

Dates are a heavily cultivated fruit plant in several regions of the world, including North America, Africa and the Middle East. To switch to different varieties or keep crops healthy, many growers need a way to kill date palm trees without damaging the surrounding area. The following article outlines various ways to do this, along with their pros and cons.

One of the least labor intensive methods is to withhold water from the tree. By depriving the tree of its main source of sustenance, the cut off of nutrients coupled with excessive heat will usually lead to the tree’s death within a few weeks or months. This method is ideal because it removes the need for chemical herbicides or other methods which may damage the soil or surrounding foliage.

Another method is to dig up the tree. This may sound like an overly complex process, but as long as the right techniques are used it can be done relatively quickly. The key is to use a deep vertical cut around the side of the tree and then make a cut through the roots around the circumference of the tree. Once the tree is loosened up in its roots it can then be pulled up and disposed of.

For the most part this is an effective but labour intensive process, which can be used when there are no alternative safe options available.
