Water It Evenly

Watering your palm tree evenly is one of the most important parts of winter protection. It is critical that you check the soil moisture of the palm tree frequently, especially if you are in an area with a lot of rain. If the soil is dry, give the tree a good drink of water. The tree needs to be kept healthy so it can withstand the cold of the winter months.

However, do not over-water the tree. If you water it too much, this can cause root rot and weaken the tree, making it more susceptible to cold weather. A good rule of thumb is to water the tree once a week, depending on the weather and the amount of rain that has fallen.

Keep The Tree Warmed

Cold weather and frost often damage the tips of the palm leaves and can stunt growth. To keep your palm tree healthy and fight frost, wrap the trunk of the tree in burlap, old blankets, or other fabric. Be sure that the fabric is not too tight, as this can block air flow and could create damage.

Pruning off dead leaves and branches should also be done in order to take some of the load off of the tree. This will ensure that the tree isn’t too stressed during the cold winter months. If the tips of the leaves look brown and dried out, you can give the palm a gentle trimming.
