Whether you’re a professional landscaper or you’re just trying to tidy up your yard, you may need to prune a palm tree from time to time. Palms are unique in the fact that they can grow new leaves from the inside out, so you need to be strategic when you prune them. With the right tools and technique, you can prune a palm tree without damaging it.

There are a few different ways that you can prune a palm tree, but the most common and effective method is to use a pruning saw. You will first need to identify the area that you want to prune, and then make a cut about 6 inches above that area. Be sure to cut at a 45 degree angle so that the remaining portion of the tree has a point to grip onto.

If you wait until spring to prune your palm tree, the dead fronds will help protect the palm from summer’s heat and winter’s cold.

When pruning a palm tree, it is important to remove any lower fronds that are dead or more than half chlorotic. Do not remove any green fronds, as this could stress the tree. If you do decide to remove green fronds, make sure not to remove those growing horizontally or pointed upward. Over-pruned palms can look terrible and attract pests.
