There are multiple ways to tell how old a palm tree is. If the tree is cut down, you can count the number of growth rings in the trunk to determine the age. If the tree is still living, you can look at the number and size of the leaves, as well as the trunk thickness.

One way to determine the approximate age of a palm tree is to count the number of rings in a cross-section of the tree trunk.

Do palm trees have age rings?

A palm tree does not create rings as it grows – it’s yearly growth isn’t marked on the tree. A palm tree does not grow bark – it’s basically the same on the inside as the outside.

Cutting a palm tree down will reveal tiny circular vessels distributed evenly throughout the trunk. These are vascular tissues, xylem and phloem. Stem cells lining these vessels produce “anomalous secondary growth” to thicken young trunks but once the trunk reaches its maximum diameter this no longer occurs.
