Soybean oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of the soybean plant. It is one of the most widely used oils in the world and is a common ingredient in many processed foods. Though soybean oil is derived from a plant, it is not considered a tree nut by the USDA. This is because tree nuts are defined as fruits with a hard shell that enclose a seed, while soybeans are classified as legumes.

Is soybean oil safe for tree nut allergy?

There is a general consensus among researchers in the field of allergies that highly refined oils, such as soybean and peanut oil, are safe for the vast majority of people managing food allergies. This is based on the fact that these oils have been heavily processed and thus have few if any of the proteins that can trigger an allergic reaction.

There are a few different types of oils that restaurants could use that wouldn’t cause allergic reactions for people who are allergic to the source material. Some of these oils include olive oil, canola oil, lard, palm oil, and corn oil. It would be beneficial for restaurants to be able to identify which oil they use in their fryers.
