Cashews are actually the seeds of a fruit. The cashew tree produces a fruit called the cashew apple. The cashew apple is a kidney-shaped fruit that grows on the cashew tree. The cashew apple is not edible for humans, but the cashew nut is. The cashew nut is the part of the cashew fruit that we eat.<\/p>\n

There are a few different types of “nuts” out there – true nuts and drupes. True nuts, like acorns, chestnuts, and hazelnuts, have a hard shell that encases the edible seed inside. A tree nut allergy is when your body reacts to tree nuts, such as almonds, Brazil nuts, cashew nuts, hazelnuts, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and macadamia nuts. There are two types of tree nut allergy. The first type is known as a primary food allergy. This is when your body reacts to tree nuts that you have eaten. The second type is known as a cross-reactive food allergy. This is when your body reacts to tree nuts that you have not eaten, but you are allergic to another food, such as peanuts.<\/p>\n

The tree nuts that are considered as priority allergens include almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts (pignolias), pistachio nuts and walnuts. Peanuts are part of the legume family and are not considered a tree nut.<\/p>\n

Cashew nut is a potent allergen causing severe and systemic allergic reactions that persist long term compared with other food allergies. Cashew nut allergy is associated with a significant risk of anaphylaxis; therefore, anaphylaxis should be considered when evaluating children with a suspected CN allergy.<\/p>\n

A cashew allergy doesn’t always develop in childhood. You can develop a tree nut allergy at any point in your life. What happens is that your body thinks a substance is harmful – that can be mold, dander, or food.<\/p>\n

Nuts are the seeds of plants, and most are the seeds of trees. Peanuts, however, are the seeds of a legume. Many nuts, including walnuts and cashews, grow inside leathery fruits, with the nut corresponding to the peach pit (also a seed) within a peach.<\/p>\n

If you are allergic to one type of tree nut, you may not necessarily be allergic to other types of tree nuts. However, some tree nuts are closely related and may trigger an allergic reaction. These include cashew with pistachio and pecan with walnut.<\/p>\n

This is the opposite of what we do with other drupes such as stone fruits like peaches, cherries and apricots where we eat the fleshy fruit and discard the hard seed.<\/p>\n
