An apple tree can be propagated by taking a cutting from the desired tree and rooting it in moist soil. The cutting should be 8-10 inches long and taken from a young, healthy tree. The bottom 2 inches of the cutting should be buried in the soil and the rest of the cutting should be left above ground.

First, find a healthy apple tree to use as a donor. Cut a 6-8 inch long branch off the donor tree that has 2-3 buds on it. Cut off the bottom leaves of the branch, leaving only the topmost leaves.

Dip the cut end of the branch in rooting hormone and plant it in a pot filled with moistened potting mix. Water the pot thoroughly. Place the pot in a bright location but out of direct sunlight.

In 4-6 weeks, roots should begin to form. Cuttings can be transplanted to a permanent location in the fall.
