As you can see, young apple trees need lots of water. They need to be watered frequently and deeply. In our orchard park, we water our newly planted trees up to three times a week, with three large buckets of water each time. That’s about 15 gallons of water.<\/p>\n

It’s important to note that, even if you’re in the midst of a “brown-lawn drought”, you shouldn’t water too much. Once every 7- to 10-days (or even once every two weeks) is plenty. Worse than dry, thirsty roots are waterlogged, drowning roots.<\/p>\n

Regular watering is crucial for helping a new fruit tree get established. A bucket of water once a week is usually sufficient, but if the weather is hot and there is no rain, you may need to water every 2-3 days.<\/p>\n

If you notice that your tree has yellow leaves on the lower branches or inside the canopy, it may be a sign of overwatering. This can also lead to root rot or fungus. Mature trees are best left to nature.<\/p>\n

If your soil is crumbly, it is time to water. If it is muddy and hard to grab, the area is receiving too much water. A simple way to check is to grab a pinch of dirt and roll it around between your fingers.<\/p>\n
