Apple trees (Malus domestica) are grown from hardwood cuttings or from rootstock grafted with a desired apple cultivar. Seeds from store-bought apples will not produce true-to-type trees. However, if you have a favorite apple and want to try to grow it from seed, you can germinate the seeds and grow them indoors for planting outdoors later.

To germinate apple tree seeds, you will need to start by soaking the seeds in water for 24 hours. After soaking, drain the water and place the seeds in a plastic bag with some moist peat moss. Put the bag in a warm place, such as an airing cupboard, and check it every few days to make sure the peat moss is still moist. Once the seedlings have germinated, they can be transplanted into pots.

Apple seeds need 60 to 90 days of moist and cold conditions to germinate. Never allow the paper towel to dry out or become waterlogged: just add moisture as needed. When they have sprouted, they are ready for sowing.

Apple seeds need to be soaked in water for an hour before planting. The germination rate for apple seeds is only about a third to half of them, so it’s best to plant more than you need.
